CAIRO, Egypt – Heavy rain hit Egypt’s eastern Red Sea governorate on Saturday, causing the closure of three roads between the governorate and parts of Upper Egypt.

The road closures meant that a group of 491 tourists were prevented from returning to their hotels in the resort town of Hurghada after a trip to visit monuments in the city of Luxor, state agency MENA reported. The tourists were put up in hotels in the town.

Luxor’s governor, Mohamed Badr, met with all the tourists on Sunday, MENA reported, to check on their situation.

Egyptians on holiday in the Red Sea governorate town of Safaga, close to Hurghada, and in Dahab, in the Sinai Peninsula, have also reported heavy rain and storms.

The hilly area between the Read Sea governorate and the Upper Egyptian governorate of Qena is known for its comparatively heavy rainfall at this time of year.
