Project Director of SWITCH-Asia Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project Srilal Miththapala, also an eTN Ambassador, made a presentation to a packed audience at the seminar on “Making Destinations More Sustainable,” which was held on November 8, 2011 at the prestigious World Travel Market (WTM) in London.

He first gave a quick overview of the phenomenal growth of tourism in post-war Sri Lanka, and then outlined the inherent aspects of Sri Lanka, which makes it a green destination.

He went on to speak of the challenges the country will face in the wake of rapid development of new hotels and the good work that the project is doing by engaging hoteliers and guiding them towards embracing more sustainable consumption practices.

The EU-funded Greening Sri Lanka Hotels project, implemented by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, has been in operation since 2009 and to date has engaged more than 150 hotels in Sri Lanka to work towards energy and environmental conservation.

The project had its own stall at the WTM and showcased the good work done to the visitors of the exhibition, thereby giving publicity and enhancing the status of Sri Lanka tourism as a sustainable tourist destination.
