MANAMA, Bahrain – Bahrain’s Shura Council approved a Royal Decree to assist those harmed during last year’s unrest by establishing a national compensation fund in accordance with United Nations General Assembly guidelines on victims’ rights of redress.

The proposal limits claims to those who experienced material, moral or physical harm by security forces or government employees. This also includes security personnel and government employees who were on duty, as well as families and victims of collateral damage.

Funding will come out of the state budget and paid to victims after an official court verdict. The Cabinet is currently developing bylaws to structure the fund and streamline the compensation process.
