Stephanie Villedrouin, the Minister for Tourism and Creative Industries from Haiti, and Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture from the Seychelles, met on the sidelines of the IFTM Top Resa Tourism Trade Fair 2014.

Both Ministers were in Paris for the French Tourism Trade Fair, and their meeting opened new avenues for cooperation based on the unique Creole culture of these two countries. Speaking to each other in Creole, Minister Villedrouin of Haiti and Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles, shared ideas and respective success stories.

The Seychelles Minister, Mr. Alain St.Ange, briefed the Minister from Haiti on the annual Kreol Festival that takes place in Seychelles to mark International Creole Day in October and invited the Haiti Minister, Mrs. Stephanie Villedrouin, to consider visiting Seychelles with a group of traditional Haiti artists for the 2015 Festival Kreol.

“We know that Haiti and the Seychelles have a lot in common through historical events, but one key attachment is our Creole culture and language. We need to use this on which to build a new level of cooperation. I invited Minister Villedrouin of Haiti to join us in Seychelles next year for the unique gathering of the Creole people, and she has accepted this invitation,” Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles said.

Last year, Seychelles saw Emeline Michel, a known Creole artist, perform at the 2013 Kreol Festival alongside performers from La Reunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Martinique. This year, it is the Creole band, Kassav, who is flying to Seychelles from the Caribbean to perform alongside Seychelles, La Reunion, Mauritius, and Rodrigues artists. “Slowly but surely the world of Creoles are being heard and appreciated, and the annual Kreol Festival in Seychelles, the Creole Capital of the World, is the event that the Community of Nations refer to as the coming together of anyone who sees himself as a Creole,” Minister St.Ange said.

Seychelles has the Creole language as one of its national languages, and it is also the home for the International Creole Institute.
